ck reflects

Sunday, 27 July 2008

After much deep, reflective consideration, I have finally decided upon a moment that deserves immortality in this esteemed blog.

16 July. It was a Wednesday like any other. We'd all traipsed into the canteen, having just finished our fun with the Step Up kiddos. AND THEN. Who else should we have spotted, than our equally esteemed teacher-mentor, Ms Low?

We got over our initial shock quickly, and sat down to a lengthy tête-à-tête with EdZ, during which we were enlightened upon Plans For The Future.

But what made an Impression on me was Ms Low's timely reminder of what it means to be an ADVOCATE.

It made me realize that au fur et a mesure de faire while doing direct service is all very well and good (especially when we can smugly compare ourselves with other inert groups. jk!!!!!!), it is essential that we remember that it is not an end in itself. I know most of us enjoy interacting with the kids, but it is all too easy to slip into this complacency, where we docilely accept whatever crap an organization may hand us, and lose sight of being our own people, namely being a group of people who want to Δ stuff around here.

The end of the year is nigh, and it's important that we not only lay down a framework with this whole Step Up programme thing, but also establish other means of doing advocacy. For this to happen we got to identify ourselves an Issue. It may be small, it may be seemingly insignificant in the Grand Scale Of Things, but Ms Low told us about the snowball effect where if we present our issue in a relevant manner, it can gather steam and eventually reach the lawmakers and politico.

Yes. So this is my Reflection. I'm sorry it took so long. Here's to a Great Leap Forward.
